Danilo and Vera Nogueira have an interesting article in the October 2006 issue of the Translation Journal: The Power of Saying “No”. The events and characters depicted in this article are fictitious. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental. Or is it?

Things are coming together for the 47th Annual Conference of the American Translators Association in New Orleans from November 1 to 4, 2006. I looked through their preliminary program and found some interesting sounding session titles this year.

• Why Can’t I Interpret? I’m Bilingual! – Wish more people would ask this question instead of just assuming they can.
• Representing & Defending Translators in France & Latin Countries – Sounds like France and Latin countries are dangerous territory for translators.
• The World of Two-Byte Characters – Watch out for those characters!
• Does Quality Management Matter? followed by Quality Assurance for the Translation Industry: Tips and Tricks and then Quality Doesn’t Matter! – Which one is it? Quality or not?
• Translating the Unspeakable: Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy Research – I seem to translate the unspeakable and incomprehensible all the time, but in different fields.
• Stop Using Your Computer like a Typewriter! – I wish this session would have an impact on those who need to learn the lesson, but they will probably not attend.

In Übersetzungpausen lese ich schon mal den einen oder anderen Artikel in der Netzeitung. Manchmal machen mich Formulierungen stutzig. Heute stand in einem Artikel mit der Überschrift „Bombenattrappe legte Zugverkehr lahm“ folgender Satz:

Das Gepäckstück erwies sich zwar als harmlos, doch die Polizei drohte mit mehrjähriger Freiheitsstrafe für den Täter.

Weiter unten im Artikel war ein Zitat des Polizeisprechers Thomas Borowik zu lesen:

Die Polizei wird derartige Kriminalitätsformen mit aller Konsequenz und mit allen zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln verfolgen.

Vielleicht lese ich da zuviel hinein. Vielleicht bin ich schon zu amerikanisiert. Vielleicht ist das in Deutschland tatsächlich anders, und nur weiß ich das nicht. Aber ist es nicht Sache des Staatsanwalts einem mutmaßlichen Täter mit Freiheitsstrafe zu drohen bzw. „Kriminalitätsformen … zu verfolgen“ und Sache der Polizei, Tatbestände zu ermitteln?

As a Queenslander by marriage and a frequent visitor to their spectacular beaches and countryside, I just had to highlight Geoffrey Pullum’s observation in a post on the meaning of the word “bite” in connection with Steve Irwin’s untimely death:

With Queensland’s wonderful but extraordinarily dangerous wildlife you never know what’ll ultimately kill you.

On my way to shop for dinner I heard this NPR segment on compilation of songs from all 39 editions of the Little Red Songbook into the Big Red Songbook.
